Thor: Love and Thunder Cameo List Includes Brother Hemsworth

The Marvel Cinematic Universe rolls on to its 30th film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, due out in November.

But the landscape of the cinematic universe has been very different since the end of Endgame, with recent movies delving into comic books and past films to find familiar and favorite faces to spice up the super-powerful shenanigans.

The cameos are now as important as the closing credits scenes, hinting at whole multiverses of creative possibilities for trusting the brains of the cinematic universe.

But director Taika Waititi likes to do things differently, and the cameos in his latest film Thor: Love and Thunder are a very Taika mix of quirks, old friends and oh-my-god moments.

Read on if you dare, but be warned – here are spoilers.

The Guardians of the Milky Way

No surprise here for anyone who paid attention (or saw the trailer).

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, the last time we saw Thor, he flew into the intergalactic sunset as an unofficial member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, who all show up here for a “classic Thor adventure”.

This won’t be the last we see of the Guardians – they star in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, due out on Disney+ in December and likely to be a loving tribute to the much-discussed 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special.

The team will also return for Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 in May 2023.

Matt Damon, Sam Neill and Luke Hemsworth

Following on from their hilarious cameos in Thor: Ragnarok, Damon, Neill and Chris Hemsworth’s older brother Luke return to do exactly what they did in Ragnarok: be actors.

The trio play the roles of Loki, Odin and Thor respectively and are used by Waititi as the terrible stars in an amateur production of one of Thor’s classic adventures. movies.

Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone

Damon, Neill and Luke Hemsworth are joined this time by Melissa McCarthy in the role of Hela, who was played with devilish pleasure by Cate Blanchett in Thor: Ragnarok.

A far less terrifying Hela, McCarthy gets to share her funny cameo with her husband Ben Falcone, who has a blink-and-you-will-it role as the stage manager of the awful production in which McCarthy and the company star. †

Past Thor regulars

Waititi killed most of Thor’s precious companions in Ragnarok, although we do get glimpses of Hogun, Vostagg, and Fandril in flashback.

The only survivor is Lady Sif, played by Jaimie Alexander, who is making her sixth appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (that’s three movies and three TV series, though I won’t reveal which in case you haven’t seen them all).

Super nerdy side note: Lady Sif suffers a fate in Love and Thunder that also happens to Thor in the Thor/Mighty Thor comics that inspired this movie.

The biggest surprise is the return of Idris Elba as Heimdall, which just goes to show that being dead doesn’t stop characters from making a comeback in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The gods

Since Stan Lee has squeezed Thor, Odin, Loki and co from Norse mythology, it shouldn’t surprise you that he appropriated gods from other pantheons to fill out the comic book universe.

Zeus is the main protagonist here, played by an unreliably accentuated Russell Crowe (who appears to be having a ball), but eagle-eyed fans will spot various Greek, Aztec, and Egyptian gods, and then some.

You may have to wait for the streaming release so you can pause it and get a good look at who’s there and who’s playing.

The Hemsworth Clan

Chris’ brother Luke isn’t the only member of the Hemsworth family to show up in Love & Thunder.

Elsa Pataky, wife of Chris Hemsworth, who starred in Matthew Reilly’s recent Netflix adventure Interceptor, appeared as a wolf woman in a flashback of Thor’s conquests.

While Pataky’s role is nothing more than a kiss with her husband, their 10-year-old daughter India Rose Hemsworth has a much bigger role in the film, starring as Love, the daughter of villain Gorr (played by Christian Bale).

The Bluey Connection

This is a deep dive, so hold on to your hat.

While making Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi and Hemsworth created a number of short mockumentaries to show what Thor was up to during the events of Captain America: Civil War, and to introduce the new comedic tone they wanted to bring to the series.

In the shorts, Thor is shown living with an Australian roommate named Darryl, who helps Thor send emails to his fellow Avengers and argues with him about the household chores.

Daley Pearson laughs and looks sideways.

Darryl returns triumphantly to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Asgardian guide, once again played by Daley Pearson, one of the masterminds behind the hit ABC Kids show Bluey, who serves as an executive producer on the program and provides the voice of Bandit’s friend Rocko.

Post credits

The closing credits of some recent Marvel Cinematic Universe films have served as gentle introductions to new characters.

We had Clea (played by Charlize Theron) in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, and Eros (Harry Styles) in The Eternals.

Now we have Hercules, played by Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein – yet another deity squeezed from mythology and thrown into comic books by Stan Lee.

Hercules’ history at Marvel dates back to 1964, and since then he has been a semi-regular member of the Avengers and was part of a short-lived team called The Champions alongside Black Widow, Ghost Rider, Iceman, and Angel.

He’s also had his fair share of run-ins with Thor, which seems to be the direction the end credits scene is pointing.
