The San Diego Padres announced on Friday that outfielder Jurickson Profar suffered a concussion and neck injury after colliding with shortstop CJ Abrams during Thursday’s game against the San Francisco Giants. The collision occurred when Profar and Abrams each chased a pop up on Tommy La Stella’s bat.

Profar, who was taken to a local hospital for examination, has since been discharged and is expected to rest. On Friday, the Padres placed Profar on the seven-day concussion IL.

While the ball was caught by a running Abrams to score the zero, he and Profar were unable to avoid each other. Profar took the brunt of the blow to the side of his face and jaw. Both players immediately lay on the ground in pain and Profar remained there for a while, holding the side of his head and jaw. But then the situation got even worse. Profar eventually tried to run off the field on his own, but he tripped and appeared to lose consciousness before collapsing on the field.

Minutes later, Profar was driven off the field with his head and neck immobilized. He punched a few teammates and appeared alert before being taken off the stretcher. He was later taken to UC San Diego Health for additional tests — tests that confirmed the aforementioned injuries.

After serving as a utilitiesman for the past few seasons, Profar has become the daily left fielder for the Padres this season and, more recently, has retained the leadoff spot. He hits .242/.343/.397 with 20 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, 38 RBI, 50 runs and four steals.
