Johnny Depp settles with City of Lies crew member who accused him of beating him out of anger

Johnny Depp has reached a settlement in a lawsuit brought against him by a crew member from the film City of Lies, who accused the actor of assaulting him during production of the film.

The 59-year-old actor reached a legal agreement with Greg “Rocky” Brooks over a settlement on Monday, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which reviewed court documents in the case.

Depp agreed in the legal agreement to settle the settlement in late August, according to court documents, as the trial in the case was said to have started later in July.

“The Settlement Agreement conditions the dismissal of this case on the satisfactory completion of specified terms not to be performed within 45 days of the date of the settlement,” the court documents in the case said. ‘A request for dismissal must be submitted no later than 1/5/2023.’

Details of the settlement have not been disclosed in court documents and the case will continue if Depp does not comply with the terms of the agreement.

Brooks initially filed suit against the actor in 2018, alleging that in April 2017, Depp punched him twice in the stomach, yelled at him, and challenged him to hit him back and offer $100,000. Brooks claimed that Depp smoked alcohol and used drugs on the set of the film during the exchange. Depp had denied the allegations.

Brooks said he was left out of the movie because he didn’t agree not to sue Depp over the encounter.

Emma Danoff, who worked as a script supervisor for City of Lies, told the court in a statement that Brooks’ account of the exchange was incorrect. Danoff said she saw Brooks use racial slurs on a black homeless woman during the filming, and Depp had responded.

“He immediately got up from our shared seat on the edge of a planter and went to Brooks to stand up for the woman,” Danoff said in the court statement. ‘Mr. Depp said to Mr Brooks, “You can’t talk to her like that. Do you think she’s a little less than you? Who do you think you are? How dare you?’

Danoff said she had photographic evidence that Depp didn’t hit Brooks.

Depp was awarded more than $10 million in June in his libel suit against ex-wife Amber Heard over a 2018 op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post, in which she called herself a “public figure representing domestic violence,” but not the actor’s name.

Much of the televised trial revolved around Heard’s claims that Depp — whom she married in February 2015 and filed for divorce in May 2016 — physically and sexually abused her, having assaulted her more than a dozen times. Depp denied ever hitting Heard, saying she insulted him.

Depp had been awarded $15 million in damages, which the judge reduced to $10.4 million in accordance with state law’s limitations on punitive damages. Heard was awarded $2 million in damages from the jury over comments by a Depp attorney that Heard had fabricated a story and destroyed an apartment she shared with Depp to make it look bad when authorities were called to the scene.

In the aftermath of the trial, Depp released a statement saying he was “really humiliated,” an advertisement the jury “gave [him his] life back” with the verdict.

“From the outset, the aim of this case was to bring the truth to light, regardless of the outcome,” he said. “Speaking the truth was something I owed to my children and to all those who have stood firm in their support of me. I feel at peace in the knowledge that I have finally achieved that.”
