Commonwealth Games 2022 LIVE: Jake Jarman wins fourth gold as Keely Hodgkinson qualifies at 800m

Commonwealth Games: Matt Walls involved in serious track cycling crash

Day five of the 2022 Commonwealth Games promises to be a blast. Team England are chasing more gold medals in artistic gymnastics, with one of the main hopes being Alice Kinsella, who can recover her disappointment in the women’s all-around final. Two days after her tearful departure from contention that the last Birmingham-born Kinsella will compete for individual device gold on the bar and women’s floor. Meanwhile, Jake Jarman is in the vault final with Joe Fraser competing on the parallel bars and horizontal bar. If they were victorious, both would finish their Games with four gold medals each.

There is also the inspiring story of Cyrille Tchatchet, who pursues a fairytale end to his story with a medal in the men’s weightlifting. Tchatchet left the Cameroonian team during the 2014 Games in Glasgow, contemplated suicide and was eventually arrested and sought asylum. He is now a mental health nurse in the West Midlands, the proud owner of a British passport and a medal contender in the 96kg men’s weightlifting category. Can he claim a Commonwealth medal today?

Elsewhere, Heather Knight was able to return from injury to captain England against South Africa with another win for the hosts taking them to the brink of the semi-finals. Adam Peaty competes in the 50m breaststroke and European judo champion Gemma Howell competes in the women’s -63kg class, with Walsall’s Daniel Powell competing in the men’s -73kg.

All of this is before mentioning that athletics is underway. The morning session offers a first look at the heptathlon starring England’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson – the 2019 World Champion and defending Commonwealth champion. Follow all the latest Commonwealth Games updates below:

Commonwealth Games 2022 – T20 Cricket

England are battling South Africa in Edgbaston, but may have just taken the lead. Katherine Brunt fired Chloe Tryon for 17 years after catching her on the border. They are 118-3.

South Africa needs 50 runs from 20 balls to win.

Jake Jarman is a four-time Commonwealth champion!

None of the other competitors come close to his score and he adds the vault gold to his impressive total.

Giarnni Regini-Moran claims silver as England continue to bag the medals in men’s gymnastics. That’s a nice birthday present for him.

2022 Commonwealth Games – Gymnastics

Oh my God. Giarnni Regini-Moran could challenge Jake Jarmon here.

A score of 14,800 for his first jump is quickly followed by a forward double somersault that scores him 14,466, which seems a bit low to me.

Still, his average is a seriously impressive 14,633, which puts him comfortably in the silver medal position.

2022 Commonwealth Games – Gymnastics

Jake Jarman is going for his fourth Commonwealth gold of the games. He is a little hesitant in the execution but holds his landing with a light step.

The difficulty was high, giving him a huge score of 14,633.

His next jump is even harder with a difficulty of six, but he lands it! Three and a half turns and a short step on landing. That’s an incredible vault.

He is now the man to beat. The second jump is rewarded with a 15,200! Jarman’s average is 14,916. It certainly can’t be beat.

2022 Commonwealth Games – Gymnastics

Northern Ireland’s Ewan McAteer rises to first place after a brilliant opening jump that gives him a 14,200. However, the landing on his second attempt is very messy and a score of 13,300 gives him an average of 13,750.

Is that enough for a medal? Maybe not.

The action in the arena is about to start with medals on the line in artistic gymnastics. Wales Emil Barber is ready for the men’s jump, but fails to land his first double somersault.

The score for that is 12.9.

Also in his second attempt, he doesn’t make a two and a half turns and is outside the medals with an average of 13,033.

Commonwealth Games 2022 – Athletics

Katarina Johnson-Thompson moves to the top of the heptathlon standings after two events with her high jump points, but she had hoped for a bigger lead.

With 2032 points, KJT leads Taneille Crase (2015) and Holly Mills (2000).

Katarina Johnson-Thompson fails in 1.87m! It’s still a good effort from the Commonwealth champion, but she’ll be a little disappointed not to erase that.

Commonwealth Games 2022 – Athletics

Two failures for defending champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson at 1.81m in the heptathlon high jump put the strain on her latest effort.

Holly Mills and Kate O’Connor from Northern Ireland can’t make it.

KJT then ventures to 1.84m and jumps over it on her first attempt. There is now a big smile on her face, she is the only athlete left in the high jump and will try to add more points to her total at 1.87m.

Commonwealth Games 2022 – Athletics

Jada O’Dowda has broken her personal best of 1.75m in the heptathlon high jump, but can’t compete with Katerina Johnson-Thompson, Holly Mills, Taneille Crase and Kate O’Connor at the following heights.

Johnson-Thompson made up for 1.75 and 1.78 with her first two attempts, but kicked the bar over 1.81m. She will want to put in a good performance here after previously finishing fifth in the 100m hurdles.
